Record low temperatures brought on by a polar vortex caused portions of the 30-meter high American Falls, one of the three falls collectively known as Niagara Falls, to freeze over. A polar vortex is a large pocket of very cold polar air which can get displaced into temperate zones. Niagara Falls were created during the Wisconsin glaciation about 10, 000 years ago by forces that also created the Great Lakes and the Niagara River. | |
