Alkane, alkene and alkyne hydrocarbons. Animation of molecular models of 3-carbon hydrocarbons with different carbon-carbon bond saturation structures (alkane, alkene, alkyne). Atoms are colour-coded spheres: carbon (grey) and hydrogen (white). Hydrocarbons contain hydrogen and carbon atoms and are referred to as saturated if all the carbon-carbon bonds are single bonds and unsaturated if they are not. Saturated hydrocarbons are known as alkanes. Hydrocarbons with a carbon-carbon double bond are called alkenes. Hydrocarbons with a carbon-carbon triple bond are called alkynes. At the start of this clip, from left, the molecules are: the alkane propane (C3.H8); the alkene propene (C3.H6); and the alkyne propyne (C3.H4). | |
