Demonstrator performing the Barking Dog reaction. This is an exothermic chemical reaction resulting from the ignition of a mixture of carbon disulfide and nitrous oxide. The reaction causes a characteristic woofing sound, along with a fast-moving blue flame front. The reaction produces elemental sulfur, along with carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas. See clip K004 4350 for a high-speed version showing the flame front. | |
