Plant life cycle, animation. A sporophyte phase, which produces spores (reproductive cells) by meiosis, alternates with a gametophyte phase, which produces gametes (eggs and sperm). Fusion and fertilisation of two gametes produces a diploid zygote. This divides to become an embryo. A sporophyte (diploid plant) develops from the embryo. Mature sporophytes contain sporangia, structures where haploid spores are formed by meiosis. The spores germinate to form gametophytes (haploid plants), which produce gametes by mitosis. | |
