Animation showing the three sets of molecules and the non-covalent bods (red lines) that are able to form between them. Non-covalent bonds do not involve the sharing of electrons, instead they involve electromagnetic interactions. In the first and second example, the surfaces of the two molecules do not fit together very well and only a few bonds can be established between them. Thermal energy breaks these bonds easily. In the third example, the surfaces fit very well, allowing numerous non-covalent bonds to form. These bonds maintain their cohesion even when exposed to thermal energy.
