Demonstration showing the miscibility of ethanol (alcohol) and water. The beaker contains water at the start, and ethanol is poured in from a bottle. Water and ethanol are both polar solvents, and are soluble in each other in all proportions, a property known as miscibility. Polar substances have a separation of electric charge across their component molecules, which allows opposite parts of neighbouring molecules to attract each other. | |
