Amplification of DNA. Animation showing the amplification of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The region of DNA to be amplified is excised from a DNA molecule and its two strands separated by heating. DNA primer sequences (yellow) are added, and the solution is cooled to allow them to attach to one end of each strand. The enzyme DNA polymerase attaches to the primer and synthesises a complementary copy (red) of the strand. Repeatedly raising and lowering the temperature produces multiple cycles, each resulting in a twofold amplification of DNA. | |
