Animation showing the ATP cycle in animal cells. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the carrier of metabolic energy in cells. In animal cells it is produced via a number of catabolic pathways that occur in the mitochondria (red centre). These pathways included glycolysis, fatty acid oxidation and amino acid degradation. The energy is released from ATP by breaking it down into ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and inorganic phosphate (Pi). Examples of biological processes that use ATP included protein synthesis (top right), movement through ion channels (centre right) and muscle contraction (bottom right). ADP and Pi are recycled to form more molecules of ATP. | |
