Collecting oxygen from pondweed. Animation of an experiment to show that oxygen is a byproduct of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which most plants convert sunlight (coming from left) into chemical energy. It occurs in organelles called chloroplasts. Photosynthesis requires water and carbon dioxide. Oxygen is a by-product of the process and can be seen here collecting in the top of the test tube. When sufficient gas is collected, the test tube is removed and a glowing splint inserted in it. In the presence of oxygen the glowing splint will burst into flame. | |
