Fibrin and clot formation. Animation showing the role played by the fibrous protein fibrin during the clotting of blood. Fibrin molecules are fibrous proteins that are formed from a precursor, fibrinogen, under the action of a protease named thrombin. Once formed, fibrin polymerases to form a 'mesh' that grows into a haemostatic plug over a wound site. The mesh is shown binding red blood cells (erythrocytes) together. A role in clotting is also played by platelets (not shown here). | |
