Menstrual cycle. Animation showing the changes that occur to the lining of a woman's uterus during the menstrual cycle. The horizontal axis shows the time in days. At the time of release of an ovum (egg) from an ovary, the lining of the uterus becomes thicker with additional layers of cells into which the ovum will sink if fertilized. The blood supply is increased at the same time. If the ovum is not fertilized, however, production of progesterone by the corpus luteum decreases and the new uterine lining disintegrates and is lost through the cervix and vagina.
