Animal cell division. Animation of the division of the cytoplasm during animal cell division. This dividing of the cytoplasm is known as cytodieresis. The process begins during anaphase of mitosis and is achieved at the end of telophase, when the interphase begins. During this process, a cleavage furrow first appears on the cell surface and completely encircles the cell in a plane perpendicular to the long axis of the mitotic spindle. With time, it deepens until the opposing edges make contact in the center of the cell. Then the membranes fuse and the original cytoplasm and the two sets of chromosomes become separated into two daughter cells. | |
