Elemental sodium metal burning in oxygen gas. Sodium burns with a yellow flame, producing sodium oxide, a white powder. The equation for this reaction is 4Na + O2 --> 2Na2O. In reality, a small amount of sodium peroxide (Na2O2) is also produced. See clip K004 2150 for the metal and its oxide side by side. | |
