Demonstration showing the solubility of iodine crystals in cyclohexane, and not water. The beaker contains water and cyclohexane, which are immiscible liquids. The cyclohexane is less dense and floats on the water. Water is a polar solvent, and cyclohexane non-polar. Iodine, being non-polar, readily dissolves in cyclohexane, forming a purple solution. Some of the iodine crystals sink before dissolving, remaining as crystals in the water. | |
