Tilt up some of the equipment used in an esterification reaction. In the flask at bottom, the alcohol butan-1-ol is heated with ethanoic acid (along with acid, and some boiling chips). Further up the apparatus, a thermometer is used to measure the temperature, here just over 80 degrees Celsius. This is known as a Fischer esterfication, and this reaction will produce the ester butyl ethanoate. | |
