Displacement reaction between magnesium and copper. In this demonstration, magnesium ribbon is added to a blue solution of copper (II) sulphate, and a metal displacement reaction occurs. Magnesium is more reactive than copper, and so displaces it from the sulphate, forming magnesium sulphate and copper metal according to the following equation: Mg + CuSO4 --> Cu + MgSO4. | |
