Rapid redox reaction. Crystals of potassium permanganate are added to a reaction flask containing hydrogen peroxide solution (35 %). This rapid redox reaction evolves high concentrations of oxygen gas and water vapour which are expelled from the reaction flask at a rapid rate. In this reaction, permanganate ions reduce to manganese ions when they gain electrons from hydrogen peroxide molecules which lose electrons and oxidise forming oxygen gas and protons. | |
