Comet ISON approaching the Sun. This series of images was taken by the joint ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, spacecraft, over 17 hours beginning at 19:42 UT on 26th November 2013. The brighter view of the sun itself is blocked to focus on the solar atmosphere, or corona. ISON is a sungrazing comet, and passed within 1.2 million kilometres of the surface of the Sun. The encounter left little visible of the comet, although a small fragment is thought to have survived. | |
