Comet ISON approaching the Sun. This series of images was taken by the STEREO A (ahead) spacecraft, between 20th-25th November 2013. At this point, Comet ISON was some two days from its perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun (right), and had already developed a prominent tail. ISON is a sungrazing comet, and passed within 1.2 million kilometres of the surface of the Sun. The encounter left little visible of the comet, although a small fragment is thought to have survived. This sequence coincidentally shows another comet, the periodic Encke. | |
