Animation of the cloud bands of the gas giant planet Jupiter. The light zones and dark belts of Jupiter rotate at different rates and in opposite directions, causing turbulence at their boundaries. The atmosphere of Jupiter is mainly hydrogen and helium, although the striking colours of the planet's clouds are due to traces of other chemicals, such as ammonia and compounds of sulphur, phosphorus and carbon. | |
