Lipids behaviour in water, animation. Lipids are amphipathic molecules, that is, they contain both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-hating) regions. This animation shows how, in water, lipid molecules (yellow) group together to form micelles. The hydrophobic fatty acid chains of the lipids are hidden inside the micelle whilst the hydrophilic head groups lie in contact with the water molecules (red and blue). | |
