Competitive inhibition, animation. A competitive inhibitor typically has a structure similar to that of the normal substrate for the enzyme. The enzyme can either bind to a substrate molecule or an inhibitor molecule but not to both at the same time. The inhibitor therefore competes with the substrate molecule to bind to the active site of the enzyme (blue). In the first few frames the normal substrate (purple) binds the enzyme and the products of the reaction of the substrate and enzyme are released. The final frames show the inhibitor (orange) binding to the active site of the enzyme and blocking the normal substrate from binding. Original same as master. | |
