Blue bottle reaction. A conical flask is seen containing a clear solution of glucose, sodium hydroxide and the indicator methylene blue. When the flask is shaken, oxygen in the air oxidises the indicator, generating the blue colour. If left alone for a sufficient time, the glucose slowly reduces the methylene blue and the solution loses its colour. This is a classic experiment to show the dynamics of a redox reaction. | |
