McMath-Pierce solar telescope, timelapse. This is one of 23 telescopes at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, USA. It is the world's largest solar telescope (as of 2013). Its 2.1 metre Sun-tracking mirror (heliostat) is at the top of a 30 metre tower (centre). The heliostat tracks the Sun and reflects its light down a 152 metre long diagonal optical tunnel (right). In the background is the city of Tucson and planes are seen arriving and departing from its airport. Among the stars seen in the night sky is the constellation Taurus. | |
