ATPase proton pump. This transmembrane protein uses the energy generated by the hydrolysis of ATP (orange) to ADP and inorganic phosphate (blue) to transport protons (light blue) across the cell membrane, lowering the pH of the interior of the cell. The enzyme can also run the other way, using the energy of a flow of protons to create ATP from ADP and phosphate. | |
