Red blood cells (erythrocytes) moving through a blood vessel. Red blood cells have a short lifespan of around 4 months. There are typically 5000 billion red blood cells per litre of blood and each cell covers 15 kilometres every day. They have a distinctive concave shape which creates an increased surface area to carry oxygen to tissues in the body and carry carbon dioxide to the lungs. | |
