Honeybee (Apis mellifera) queen, the larger bee near center of frame, seeking empty brood cells in which to deposit her eggs. She finds one and then extends her abdomen deep into the cell to deposit an egg. The queen's only function is to reproduce and she will lay as many as 2, 000 eggs a day in the spring, all the time being tended to by worker bees who feed and groom her. | |
