Braconid wasp (Habrobracon hebetor), barely 3mm in size, after injecting eggs into a Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella) larva's body using the needle-like ovipositor located at the end of its abdomen. Braconids are parasitoids which means they are parasites only during the larval stage of their life cycles. When the wasp's eggs hatch, they will feed on the larva, eating it from the inside out. These tiny wasps, and thousands of other species like them, are considered beneficial to humans as they control populations of agricultural pests. | |
