Truck driving up to the summit of the Cerro Armazones mountain, the site of the planned European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Cerro Armazones is a 3000 metre mountain in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is one of the driest places on Earth, making it ideal for optical and near-infrared observations. The E-ELT will be the largest optical telescope in the world when it is completed in 2022, with a 39.3-metre-diameter mirror. It will be used to look for and study Earth-like planets. | |
