Vaginicola protozoan feeding. Light microscopy footage of a tubular protozoan (Vaginicola) using its cilia to feed in water. Vaginicola is an example of the infusoria (freshwater aquatic organisms). It forms and lives in vase-like or tubular cases attached to a plant or animal substrate. It has a trumpet-like opening (centre) surrounded by a rim of cilia that beat to draw food inside its gullet. This beating action and food particles being drawn towards the opening, is shown in this footage. The green colour comes from symbiotic green algae (zoochlorellae). | |
