Demonstration showing the changing oxidation states of vanadium. Here, mercury-zinc amalgam is added to a solution of vanadium V (+5) ions, which have a yellow colour in solution. The amalgam is a reducing agent, which reduces the oxidation state of vanadium each time it is shaken up. Each oxidation state has a different colour in solution.
