Demonstration of vanadium oxidation states. Vanadium is a transition metal that can form a number of different ions. Each ion has a characteristic colour in solution. In this demonstration, a reducing agent (mercury-zinc amalgam) has been added to the yellow vanadium V (+5) solution. The amalgam reduces the oxidation state of the vanadium by one each time it is shaken, producing, in order: vanadium IV (+4, blue), vanadium III (+3, green) and vanadium II (+2, violet). These are seen together at the end of the clip. | |
