Animation of a T4 bacteriophage virus infecting and killing an Escherichia coli bacterium. T4 is a virus that only attacks E. coli bacteria. Its long tail fibres (pale green) recognise proteins on the bacterium's surface, causing it to bind to the cell membrane and puncture it with its tail tube. Its DNA then enters the bacterium, and hijacks the bacterium's cellular machinery, forcing it to produce new copies of the virus. These ultimately cause the bacterium to burst, killing it and releasing new virus particles. | |
