Asteroids approaching Earth. Asteroids are small rocky bodies that are thought to be debris from the formation of the Solar System. Most of them exist in the Asteroid Belt, a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Disturbances within the belt can occasionally send an asteroid inwards towards the Earth. Many large asteroids are thought to have collided with Earth in the past, including the impact of a 10-kilometre-wide body 65 million years ago that is thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. | |
