Zoom in to the galaxy cluster Abell 2218, highlighting the very distant galaxy A2218_z1. Abell 2218 is a cluster of galaxies about two billion light years away, in the constellation Draco. Acting as a powerful gravitational lens, it magnifies and distorts the image of the galaxies lying behind the cluster core into long arcs. Its powerful magnification allowed the identification of A2218_z1, which is reckoned to be 13 billion light years from Earth, and thus is being observed as it existed just 700, 000 years after the Big Bang.<br>Restrictions: | |
