Pan across the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a nearby irregular galaxy that is a satellite of the Milky Way. The galaxy has a diameter of about 14, 000 light years, and contains numerous objects of interest, which are viewed in this montage. At the start is a pan over the emission nebula N55, then the young globular cluster NGC 1978, then the open cluster NGC 2002, then the stellar association NGC 1948, and finally the supernova remnant N49. The LMC lies around 160, 000 light years from Earth, in the constellations Dorado and Mensa.<br>Restrictions: | |
