Alternating visible light and infrared views of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365. At visible wavelengths, dust blocks much of the light from objects behind it. The dust is far more transparent to infrared radiation, though, permitting fine detail study of the structure of the galaxy at those wavelengths. The visible views were taken by the FORS1 camera on the Very Large Telescope, the IR views by the HAWK-1 camera. NGC 1365 is a member of the Fornax Galaxy Cluster, and lies around 56 million light years from Earth in the constellation Fornax.<br>Restrictions: | |
