Zoom in from a wide view of the Milky way to the Arches Cluster of massive stars. The Arches is the densest cluster known, packing around 150 hot young massive stars into a region just two light years across. The stars are thought to be only around three million years old, and are so massive and luminous that they are expected to end their life in supernova explosions in the next few millions years. The cluster lies just 100 light years from the centre of the galaxy, around 25, 000 light years from Earth. Due to the huge clouds of gas and dust in this region, it is totally obscured at optical wavelengths, and can only be seen in the infrared. The first part of this zoom is optical, with just the last stage showing the region at infrared wavelengths. From Earth, the galactic centre and this cluster lie in the constellation Sagittarius.<br>Restrictions: | |
