Zoom from a wide view of the Milky Way galaxy to the globular cluster M4. M4 is a medium-sized globular cluster, being some 75 light years in diameter. Globular clusters are spherical aggregations of stars that orbit the centre of galaxies. Our Milyk Way is thought to have a population of some 180 globulars. M4 is located in the same area of the sky as an extensive region of nebulosity known as the Rho Ophiuchi nebula, visible here as clouds of yellow and pink gas, and dark dust. The bright star Antares (Alpha Scorpii) is left of the cluster, in the yellow nebulosity. Despite appearing in the same part of the sky, the cluster and nebula are not related. The nebulae lie around 460 light years from Earth, making it one of the closest such nebulae, while M4 orbits the centre of the galaxy, and lies far beyond it at 7200 light years. Even at that distance, it is one of the closest globulars to Earth.<br>Restrictions: | |
