Zoom into the centre of the active galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128). This object is thought to be the result of the collision between a large elliptical galaxy and a spiral galaxy. The dark dust lane crossing the bright nucleus is thought to be the remnant of the smaller galaxy. The galaxy is a strong emitter of radiowaves and X-rays, powered by a high-speed jet of material from the centre of the galaxy. The collision has caused a burst of star formation as well. The galaxy lies some 15 million light years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus.<br>Restrictions: | |
