Zoom into the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S) image. This is a long-exposure image taken by the Chandra X-ray Observatory satellite, showing a small patch of the sky in the constellation Fornax. This region was selected for observation because it has much less galactic gas and dust to obscure distant sources. The project discovered 300 new X-ray sources, and the most distant type 2 quasar known at the time, at a distance of 12 billion light years. The image was exposed for a total of more than one million seconds, between 1999 and 2000.<br>Restrictions: | |
