Zoom into NGC 613, a barred spiral galaxy. Central bars such as this one are found in approximately two-thirds of all spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way. It is thought that the barred form is a mature stage in the life of most spiral galaxies, as nearby (and thus older) spiral galaxies show a greater proportion of the barred forms than those that are further away (and thus younger, as we see them). NGC 613 lies around 65 million light years from Earth in the constellation Sculptor.<br>Restrictions: | |
