Animation of the change in brightness of comet 17P Holmes in the autumn of 2007. This comet was a 17th magnitude object until an enormous outburst on 23rd and 24th October 2007. This raised it to magnitude 2.8, easily visible to the naked eye as a circular patch around half the Moon's width. The outburst caused the comet's coma (the cloud of dust and gas surrounding the nucleus) to swell to a greater size than that of the Sun for a short period, although this expansion reduced its surface brightness. This was the largest outburst ever seen in a comet.<br>Restrictions: | |
