Animation of a transit of Venus across the disc of the Sun. As seen from Earth, this event occurs in a cycle of 243 years, with a pair of transits separated by eight years, and each pair separated by 105.5 and 121.5 years. The last transit was observed on 8th June 2004, and there will be another in June 2012. The transit takes about 6 hours, and is visible from most of the facing hemisphere, which in 2004 included Europe, Africa and Asia. In the past, transits of Venus were studied to determine the distance between the Earth and the Sun.<br>Restrictions: | |
