Animation of the asteroid 128 Nemesis approaching Earth and entering the atmosphere, and passing through it without colliding with the Earth. 128 Nemesis is a large asteroid, some 190 kilometres in diameter, which orbits the Sun in the main asteroid belt. Its elliptical orbit takes it between 2.4 and 3.1 times the Earth-Sun distance. Gravitational interactions with Jupiter could send the asteroid on a collision course with Earth, as has happened in the past with other asteroids. Collision with a body the size of 128 Nemesis would be catastrophic for life on Earth.<br>Restrictions: | |
