Image sequence showing the effect of the collision of the Deep Impact projectile with the comet 9P Tempel 1, which occurred on 4th July 2005. The sequence initially shows the comet just before the impact, then follows the expanding debris for 19 hours after the collision. The final view show a developing fan of dust, which is travelling at about 720 kilometres an hour. The fan of debris is about 3, 200 kilometres across. Study of the debris cloud revealed much about the composition of the comet.<br>Restrictions: | |
