The Dumbbell Nebula (M27 or NGC 6853) is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Vulpecula, around 1360 light years away from Earth. A planetary nebula is a shell of gas and dust cast off by a Sun-like star at the end of its life, which is then caused to glow by radiation from the extremely hot remnant of the star that remains at the shells' centre. The Dumbbell Nebula was the first planetary nebula to be discovered, by Charles Messier, in 1764.<br>Restrictions: | |
