The effects of water and wind erosion can be seen in this view of rock formation in the Valley of the Gods, Utah. The formations here are composed of Cedar Mesa sandstone, the same rock that forms the formations in nearby Monument Valley. The top layers are composed of a harder caprock which contribute to the formation of pinnacles, buttes, mesas, spires and hoodoos. The red colour of the sand and rocks derives from particles of iron oxides. | |
