Close-up of some of the rooms at Keet Seel, one of the largest and best preserved Anasazi cliff dwellings in the Southwest. This ruin in northern Arizona dates back more than a thousand years and may have housed as many as 150 people at its peak. It is thought the Anasazi built cliff dwellings to defend themselves from hostile tribes living in the area. This dwelling was occupied for more than 300 years and was abandoned about 1300 A.D., possibly in response to a prolonged drought. | |
