Animation of the collision between two large bodies in the early Solar System. The planets in the Solar System formed from the remains of the nebula that formed the Sun. Tiny dust particles aggregated over millions of years, forming rocks that collided to form planetesimals, which in turn collided to form protoplanets such as these. A collision between large protoplanets is thought to have been responsible for the formation of the Moon. See clips K002/4964, K002/4971 and K002/4968 for the earlier stages before this. | |
